Top 9 Best Tatami Mattresses

Tatami mattresses or mats are traditionally used within Japanese homes as both flooring and for sleeping. Typically they’re made of rice straw and covered with a layer of woven rush grass. The thing which makes tatami mats so unique is that they can easily be folded up when not in use.

Sure, these mattresses may not be quite as comfy as what you’ve been used to in the past. However, once you get used to sleeping on a tatami mattress, you’ll probably find that it’s not as bad as you first thought.

There are many reasons why people invest in tatami mats and in this article we’ll look at some of those reasons before delving into some reviews on the top 9 best tatami mattresses around right now. Finally, we’ll give some pointers as to what to look out for when shopping for one.

When you get a tatami mat, you're going to need the futon that goes along with it! Check out our top 10 list of Japanese Futons!

What are the Benefits of Using a Tatami Mat?

If you’re from the western part of the world the sleeping on the floor may seem very strange, but if you’re from Japan it’s perfectly normal. There are many great benefits to see from sleeping on a tatami mat and in this section we’re going to explore some of the main ones:

  • Health benefits. Some of the health benefits associated with sleeping on tatami mats include:

    • helps to keep the joints aligned correctly

    • there’s less chance of any dust mites or bed bugs breeding

    • helps to improve your posture

    • can make you feel more rested

  • Saves space. Most tatami mattresses are laid down before bed and taken up when you get up in the morning. This means that when you’re not sleeping, you’ll have a lot more free space to do what you want.

  • Eco-friendly. Traditional tatami mats are made from rice straw, that take just one season to grow. They’re biodegradable and completely recyclable.

  • Helps control humidity. Rice straw is very good at absorbing extra moisture from the air, and from your own body. Hence why it’s a good idea to air your tatami mat daily to prevent mold.

  • Less costly than a traditional bed. Tatami mattresses are considerably cheaper than a traditional mattress and bed frame.

  • Great insulators. These mattresses are traditionally made of tightly woven straw that’s around 5cm thick. Because of this, they are fantastic at keeping the warmth in, especially during the winter.

One of the other great things about this product is that it has an antistatic and anti-slip mat that’s breathable and won’t shed hair. The price is much cheaper than a western style bed and mattress will cost you and will help improve air circulation while you sleep. And while the padding may seem thin at first glance, it’s actually quite comfortable when you bed down for the night.

All-in-all, it’s a great product that I would recommend to anyone wanting to try out Tatami style sleeping.

The MustHome Japanese Traditional Tatami Mat is a very well-made example that’s thick and comfortable yet easy to fold and pack away. It has a surface that’s made from 100% rush grass, while the back of the mat is made from a non-woven fabric.
To use it as a full on bed, you’ll probably need two of these and push them together. This will give you the equivalent space if a US Queen size mattress. In terms of comfort, it's very good and much thicker than some of the other models on this list.

The price is heading towards the high end, but when considering the high quality of this mat, it’s understandable. It’s easy to set up and pack away and easy to clean. Overall, it’s not a bad choice at all.

Easily foldable into a compact, portable size and weighing less than 2 pounds, this is the perfect accessory to use at home, at the beach or camping.

Tips on How to Maintain your Tatami Mat

A traditional tatami mat is a good investment that’s likely to last quite some time, provided it’s looked after. The following few tips will help keep you on the right track when it comes to maintaining your tatami mat:

  • If ever you vacuum your tatami mat, always make sure you do it along the grain to avoid damaging the surface.

  • Avoid wiping a tatami mat with a wet cloth as they are highly absorbent. Any moisture that’s retained could cause mold growth.

  • To rid any smells from your tatami mat use a small amount of regular vinegar to wipe the surface.

  • If you do spot any mold growth on your tatami mat, simply scrub it with ethanol using a small toothbrush, and do it before it spreads.

  • Never wear shoes on your tatami mat.

  • Allow your tatami mat to be aired in a well-ventilated area on a regular basis.
