MariCar- Go-Kart is Blue Shelled: High Court Sides with Nintendo
If you do not know the famous real life Mario-kart in Japan, look it up. Formally known as Maricar, now Mari Mobility Development lets visitors go karting across the streets of Tokyo, Akihabara, Shibuya and Harajuku. It was very popular among foreigners and all you needed was an International license. However Nintendo was not happy with the company using their name and likeness for profit. Nintendo argued in court that the term “MariKar” as well as the use of the character’s costumes was not permitted and the the photos and footage as well was not permitted. Starting in April 2017, Nintendo was seeking around $89,000. As of May 30th, Nintendo gave an update about the legal battle saying that the Intellectual Property High Court passed in Nintendo’s favor. As of January 2019, Mari Mobility Development was still running and filed the trademark “Unrelated to Nintendo.”
