Animes are known to be light hearted and fun- a whimsical fantasy that all ages can enjoy. However that isn’t always the case now that anime has attracted a world wide audience. Now animes are made with a variety of audiences and age ranges in mind. Listed are the Top 5 Darkest Animes.

Promised Neverland

Being raised in a loving home for the sake of becoming someone’s meal can leave you unnerved. As Emma and her friends find out the intent of their existence, they do all they can to fight the culture they live in. Although they are very talented and have a high education, they are still children going against a demon’s world. Between hiding all their secrets from their dorm mother and having a spy in their ranks, Neverland guides you through each helpless situation as these children try to break a long-standing system.


Shiki

A new family moves in, a girl suddenly dies, and others start to see her corpse move through the night? Shiki is a story of a town filled with a vampire infestation, with the worst part being the vampires are its past citizens. A killing spree ensues as the newly turned vampires and the townsfolk fight for control of their town. Each needs the other gone to survive and people are willing to go to great lengths to achieve this. Morals break, people lash out, and you question the sanity of the townsfolk. Seeing a happy town break into civil war from a situation out of their control, leaves you feeling sad for both sides.



Psycho-pass

Technology can be a tool, but in Psycho-pass it is an asset. Akane Tsunemori is an enforcer who is transformed through her experiences of this failing system. Her morals are tested, and she begins to ask more questions that others don’t investigate. The system defines what is right and what is wrong, leaving little up to the citizens to interpret. It’s up to Akane to judge her world, and her colleagues that have been seen as unfit to live proper lives.




SCHOOL-LIVE

SCHOOL-LIVE tells a story of survival. The apocalypse has made its first wave and these girls must now prepare for their new sense of “normal”. Many loved ones have been lost and the city is in ruin, but the girls rely on each other and their club to keep living. SCHOOL-LIVE’s world opens through the eyes of Yuki, a 3rd year who has blocked the reality surrounding her. You live out her story as she is forced to remember each event that lead to her current life. The pain at her situation and the emotions that all the characters carry leave you just wanting the world to be okay for these girls, and the hope that they just keep living.





Akame Ga Kill

The underworld is a dark place, but the people you meet can be a light. Tatsumi is a naïve country boy that is thrown into this world after the members of night raid show off the nobility’s corruption. Friendship, loss, and love mold his character as the show progresses. Each side of the conflict is given a story, and lets you choose who you believe is in the wrong. You feel the burden of each death, and the weight that each of their weapons hold as they are passed to a new user.
