DIY Guide: Kirito Sword Art Online and Jacket Cosplay

Kirito, Kazuto Kirigaya, is the main protagonist in a world that takes place in a Virtual Reality RPG called Sword Art Online (SAO). In this world, people are able to log in and control their own created avatars with their thoughts alone, being able to travel, fight monsters, and venture on to quests. The only catch: they are stuck in this world. FOREVER. Or until they complete all 100 levels of the game! If you die in the game, you will die in real life.

So, you want to cosplay as this 14 year old teenager that goes through struggles of corruption of other players, fighting monsters that he cannot defeat, and trying to survive? OK! Let’s break it down!

Hair

Kirito’s hair is a little messy. He has that typical hair that falls upon one’s face. His hair is typically in an “M” shape that has a long middle point. You should usually put hair spray to keep its shape. If your hair is naturally like this, well, damn, live it UP.

If you do not have long enough hair for this, a wig would suffice! This wig is able to be put on and styled a little bit to resemble Kirito’s!

Clothes

Kirito rocks a crazy looking coat for his attire. Although he switches his outfits in the later arcs, his first coat coined his icon alias “Black Swordsman.”

Before we get to the coat, you will need the basics of the outfit!

A black tee shirt

The classic.

Black pants

Preferably Chinos, or anything that is comfortable to look as dress pants.

A black belt

Any suffices. Nobody will notice your belt when you have huge swords.

And some black gloves.

We prefer gloves that can be used for other stuff. Plus, they look more bad ass than plain cloth ones.

Coat

If you plan on making your own coat, a great base would be the one below. You can adjust it to however you please and even put your own swagger into it. Using fabric found at your local fashion store or arts and crafts store, you could get whichever fabric you choose and put a white outline to it, creating the details for the iconic look to the coat. Make sure to include the little badge on the shoulder too!

If not, that’s fine too. There are plenty of already made Kirito Coats online!

Here is the whole pack if you don’t feel like getting the stuff together! (Does not include shoes and wig)

Boots

And last of the attire are boots! These boots are kind of easy to make. You need black boots and some silver paint. Coloring the heels and the top of the boot are the easiest parts. You may even want to put some fabric over it to give it layers! Then, add a slice of cardboard or any plastic over the top where the tongues of the boot should be and maybe hot glue gun it on.

Swords

Ok, so here’s the fun part: the SWORDS. It’s called Sword Art Online for a reason.

First of all, you need the straps to put your weapons in. These will keep it secuuuuuuuure!

Next, you’ll need the swords. Most cons don’t allow actual swords for obvious reasons of health hazards so here are some foam alternatives!

These are pretty sick replicas. Cosplay safe. Convention safe. It’s all good!

And that’s it! Make up isn’t really needed unless you’re crossplaying or hiding blemishes. Have fun being Kirito from Sword Art Online! See ya at the next Con!
