The 40 Best Rom Com Anime - Comedy Romance Anime
Who doesn’t love love? Everyone loves an adorable, sweet, comical romance. The anime genre of rom com is just what you think it is: romantic comedy. It is about exploring love, friendships, and sweet memories. Along the way, the characters may bump into comical misunderstandings and unexpected situations that keep the story going. Regardless of their slight mishaps, the drama and comical nature is what makes rom com one of my most favorite anime genres.
Since, I love this genre with a passion, I figured I would compile the very best rom com anime into one easy to search through list. Even if you are used to Dragonball Z and Naruto, you can find something on this. While this genre is different from several other anime genres, there is something for everyone to love within it. Plus, I have included plenty of options! So, if you do not end up liking one, then just skip to the next and find one you love!

1. Lovely Complex
Lovely Complex is just about the cutest rom com anime out there, which is why it is the top of my list for the best rom com anime. You will not find another anime quite like it. The story follows Risa Koizumi and Atsushi Otani. These two start off as best friends who are often teased. They are at the end of all of their friend’s jokes because their height difference makes them appear quite comical alongside each other. Although the two don’t really get along, they decide to help each other nab their crushes
2. Ouran High School Host Club
Ouran Academy is a school for elite young adults that Haruhi Fujioka attends. She accidentally stumbles upon a seemingly abandoned music room filled with male students that entertain different females with snacks. She ends up breaking a very expensive vase and the group enlists her as their errand boy. But, she becomes mistaken for a boy and is soon promoted to a host like them. It’s quite quirky, fun, and lighthearted.
3. Itazura Na Kiss
Itazura Na Kiss is definitely one of the sweeter romantic comedy animes, which makes it one of the best rom com anime as well. It follows Kotoko Aihara, who is pretty klutzy, and her crush Naoki Irie. Kotoko’s feelings are not reciprocated. Her house is destroyed in an earthquake and she ends up staying with Naoki’s family. She sees this opportunity as a way to win over his heart. This a sweet romance that showcases Kotoko’s attempts at love as very endearing.
4. Toradora
This anime focuses on Ryuuji Takasu and Taiga Aisaka. Taiga looks sweet and innocent, but is actually quite feisty. The two end up discovering they both have crushes on each other’s best friends. So, they decide to work together. This anime is regarded by viewers as being a masterpiece. The different dynamic between these two is what pushes the comedy throughout, making it one of the best rom com anime.
5. Fruits Basket
After her mother’s tragic death, Tooru lives in the forest on her own. Yuki Souma and his cousin offer Tooru their home. Although the death of her mother is a heavy hitter in this anime and still affects Tooru, the lightheartedness and mysticalness of discovering a family secret about the people she is living with really develops this anime. Tooru discovers that each member of the family is cursed by a spirit and when upset, turns into their spirit animal. Because of her love for the family, Tooru embarks on a mission to free the members of her adoptive family and learns a lot more about them in the process.
6. Oregairu
Oregairu is one of the best rom com anime because it is actually quite relatable to high school students. Hikigaya Hachiman is somewhat antisocial and not sure on his purpose. A teacher enrolls him in a club. Yukinoshita Yukino, the prettiest girl in school, also happens to be in this club. This club offers help and advice to other students.
7. Nisekoi
This anime focuses on Raku Ichijou, described as a normal student. Raku is attending a new school, but made a promise to a childhood best friend many years ago. They promised that when they reunited they would get married. The unique characters in this anime truly bring out it’s comical side. Raku ends up losing the locket that means a lot to him and enlists Chitoge, a girl he was with when he lost it, to help him look for it. They end up becoming rivals and unbeknownst to them, their families are part of rival gangs. In order to end their feud, the families decide to join each other by having an arranged marriage of Chitoge and Raku. This rivalry makes things complicated, yet funny. But, even a hitman is involved.
8. Golden Time
Tada Banri is lost at a law school in Tokyo. He just so happens to bump into another lost freshman: Yanagisawa Mitsuo. They instantly become friends and make it to their destination. Once they arrive, before them stands a girl holding roses. This is a sweet rom com anime, making it one of the best.
9. Haganai
Hasegawa Kodaka has just moved schools. Nobody really wants to be his friend because he looks like a delinquent. What really makes this anime a rom com? Yozora, his easily angered classmate, is seen by him talking to her imaginary friend. The two of them decide to start their own club, filled with people who also have no friends.
10. My Little Monster
Shizuku is kind of cold-blooded, setting this rom com anime apart from the rest. She is instructed to deliver handouts to Haru. Haru sees this as Shizuku reaching out to be his friend. Shizuku is instantly shocked by his innocent nature.
11. Special A
Special A features a fun flirty rivalry, making it one of the best rom com anime. It focuses on Hikari Hanazono and Kei Takishima. Hikari wants nothing more than to beat Kei in everything possible. So, she stays enrolled at the same schools as him in hopes of beating him in grades and sporting events.
12. Clannad
Clannad focuses on Okazaki Tomoya, who is a troubled student who isn’t easily excitable. He unexpectedly meets Furukawa Nagisa, who shouts things she likes to make herself more excited about things. The two being somewhat opposites makes their interactions quite comical.
13. Kimi ni Todoke
This is also a very sweet rom com anime. Kuronuma Sawako is very shy and kind, but her shyness has led her classmates to think she is mean. She longs to make friends and his need draws her to the most popular guy at school: Kazehaya Shouta.
14. Honey and Clover
This romantic comedy anime will pull at your heartstrings, but is also uplifting and comical at times as well. The character development is heavy. Honey And Clover follows Takemoto Yuuta, Mayama Takumi, and Morita Shinobu as broke college students all living under one roof. A very talented girl named Hanamoto Hagumi appears and romance begins to bloom.
15. One Week Friends
This rom com anime focuses on Kaori Fujiyama who is always alone because her memories disappear at the beginning of every week. Yuuki Hase decides he wants to be her friend anyway. So, he attempts every week to get close enough so she will refer to him as a friend.
16. Skip Beat
This story focuses on Kyouko and her childhood friend Shou. Kyouko starts off as being very supportive of Kyouko’s new lifestyle and his dreams of making it big in the entertainment world. But, then Kyouko overhears Shou bad mouthing her to other people and she begins her plot for revenge.
17. Nana
This anime has two very different characters. At least, that is how they are portrayed when unexpectedly meeting on the train. Komatsu Nana and Osaki Nana then discover they are both roommates. These two become close friends and share secrets, as well as support each other’s love lives.
18. Gamers!
Gamers! Focuses on Keita Amano, who is a high school student who plays video games by himself. Karen Tendo invites him to join the school’s gaming club. He declines. This declination of the offer starts a whole list of events and understands that are both comical and heartfelt. They lead to unexpected events and unexpected romance along the way.
19. The World God Only Knows
Nerdy Keima Katsuragi is what makes this rom com anime so funny. He is known on the internet as being very good at interacting with 2D girls. In real life, Keima is an outcast. He accepts an email without thoroughly reading it about “conquering” girls. A demon from Hell soon arrives to enlist his help in capturing demons.
20. Yamada-kun and The Seven Witches
Ryu Yamada is the character this rom com anime focuses on. He’s bored at school and is kind of a troublemaker. He accidentally falls on top of Urara Shiraishi and upon waking up, realizes he has switched bodies with her. That alone, is what makes this anime one of the best rom com anime. But, it only gets better when the two try to do whatever they can to reverse the change.
21. Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend
How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend is very unique, which makes it one of the best rom com anime. The story follows a group of teenagers creating a video game to sell at the Comiket convention. But, it closely follows Tomoya Aki who develops a crush on Megumi. He asks her to star as the love interest for the character in the game.
22. The Devil is a Part-Timer
Satan has been forced through a portal that drops him off in modern day Japan. His magic is slowly dying, so he must act as a normal human being. Hero Emilia followed Satan through the portal, but it is having the same effect on her. In order to survive in their new world, they realize they must act as allies.
23. The Pet Girl of Sakurasou
Sumei University is home to the most troubled students. Sakura Dormitory is affiliated with the University. Sorata Kanda moves in, due to being kicked out of the regular dormitory, around the same time that Mashiro Shiina does. Marshiro is very troubled and Sorata is forced to become her handler. This anime is cute and quirky.
24. Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun
Chiyo Sakura has a crush on Umetaro Nozaki. Eventually, she confesses her love for him, but he mistakens her for fangirling. He instinctively gives her his autograph. She discovers he is actually an artist and she agrees to be his assistant. While helping him with his work, she encounters couples that inspire his drawings.
25. Maid Sama
Seika High is infamous for it’s rowdy students and used to be an all boys school. Misaki Ayuzawa is on a mission to make the school more geared towards the newly included girls. However, even though she has gained the trust of several teachers, the boys who go to school with her regard her as a boy hating demon. Misaki is harboring a secret in order to support her family and Takumi Usui finds out about it.
26. Kamisama Kiss
Kamisama Kiss is the definition of cute rom com anime. It follows lighthearted Nanami Momozono, who has just gotten kicked out of her house due to her father gambling away all their money. It is at the local park that she meets Mikage, who is hiding up a tree from a dog. Mikage invites her to his home, where she learns he lives in a shrine and he wishes to make her a new deity.
27. Nijiiro Days
Nijiiro Days, also known as Rainbow Days, is lighthearted and fun. It follows the story of four high school teenage boys who are best friends. They just stick to each other and are pretty close-knit. But one of the boys, Natsuki, develops a crush on Anna. Natsuki falls hard for Anna and the other three boys begin to tease them and meddle in their relationship.
28. Jitsu wa Watashi wa
The odd ways in Jitsu wa Watashi wa is what makes it one of the best rom com anime. Kuromine is a truth-teller and is known to never tell a lie. But, he is harboring one secret. This secret is his crush on Shiragami Youko. He discovers that when nobody is looking she has huge wings on her back and long canines.
29. Ore Monogatari!!
Takeo Goda does not have a lot of good luck with women. This is because his best friend Makoto Sunakawa is seen as being more attractive and charming than he is, despite Takeo being tall and muscular. But, one day Takeo saves Rinko Yamato. Rinko Yamato is portrayed as very frail and shy. This makes Rinko Yamato and Takeo Goda appear to look like complete opposites. This causes her to fall in love with him and their unique comical relationship begins. Due to her soft and caring nature, it was easy for Rinko to fall in love with Goda.
30. Ojisan and Marshmallow
Ojisan and Marshmallow isn’t your typical high school flirty romance, which makes it one of the best rom com anime. It follows Habahiro Hige, who is in his late thirties and loves Tabekko marshmallows. Lori Wakabayashi knows this and will tease him about it by eating them in front of him and buying all of them from the store. Her friends are very confused on why Lori is teasing Habahiro, but it is later revealed that she actually has a crush on him and is trying to get his attention.
31. I Can’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying
The name says it all for this one. The difference between this rom com anime from others is that they aren’t still in high school, they are already married! That is why this is one of the best rom com anime. Besides the two of their interactions being quite funny, you get to dive deeper into their pasts as well. You even get to meet Hajime’s younger brother who is a cross-dresser.
32. First Love Limited
The anime focuses on the individual stories of eight girls in high school and middle school. These stories are intertwined however and eventually lead to the main story. It’s a cute lighthearted rom com anime surrounding first loves. If you like watching people fall in love for the first time, then this the anime for you!
33. Ao Haru Ride
Futaba Yoshioka is tired of pretending to be something she is not to fit in. That is when she befriends an outcast: Yuri Makita. She also befriends Kou Tanaka, who she was friends with when they were younger. She regards him as being a completely different person. The anime follows the romantic interests of all three of them and how they intertwine with each other.
34. Tsuredure Children
Tsuredure Children is a very relatable rom com anime. This anime follows the stories of several couples and how they came to fall in love with each other and other special moments. What keeps this anime comical is sometimes these moments are interesting, unlikely, and full of misunderstandings that keep things interesting.
35. Tari Tari
This is a very lighthearted and easy going rom com anime that will make you get really invested into the characters. The story focuses on five different high school students who are starting to grasp what it means to be young adults. Music is something that ties all of them to each other.
36. Ano Hana
The story follows the lives of six friends who are still recovering from the tragic death of their childhood friend. Jinta Yadomi, the leader of the group of friends, is visited by Menma’s ghost and is asked to help her fulfill a wish she has so she can move to the afterlife. Jinta feels he is crazy and asks his friends for assistance when Menma can’t remember what her wish is.
37. The Anthem of The Heart
Jun is unable to speak due to a curse from causing her parent’s to divorce after seeing her father with another woman. Jun enlists the help from a member of a committee she has joined to write a song for her so she can sing her words, assuming the curse won’t apply. The result is that a few love triangles soon develop.
38. Shigatsu wa Kimi no uso (Your Lie In April)
Kosei Arima was a child musical prodigy, but after his estranged mother’s death he decides not to touch the piano again. A girl, however, changes everything. That is because Kaori Miyazono is free-spirited and outspoken. She also plays the violin and her style reflects her personality. With her help and guidance, she leads Kosei back into the music world.
39. Violet Evergarden
Auto Memory Dolls were created by Dr. Orland to help his blind wife Mollie. Later they were used by other writers who needed their services. This anime follows Violet Evergarden as she attempts to integrate back into normal society and figure out her life’s purpose.
40. Waiting in The Summer
Kaito Kirishima and his friends decide to make a film project over the summer after school gets out with his camera. Kaito has a crush on an upperclassman, so one of his friends invites her as well. Over the course of the summer, friendships develop, exciting things happen and feelings must be confronted.
Romantic comedy anime is the perfect genre if you like lighthearted witty romance with a touch of drama. These animes might not start off at one-hundred percent lovey-dovey, but that does not mean that they aren’t good quality rom com anime. In fact, every anime listed is one of the best rom com anime that I love. But, I am also a hopeless romantic that loves following the stories of the characters in these anime series.
